Walnut (Black)

The walnuts are cultivated for their distinctive and desirable taste.  Compound leaves with 14-22 leaflets on short, almost hairless, stalks with the last leaflet being smaller than the rest.  The grey-black bark is deeply furrowed into thin ridges giving it a diamond shaped pattern.  The round fruit (nut) ripens in autumn and falling in October or November.  Most parts of the tree have a very characteristic pungent or spicy odor.  Seedlings emerge in April or May and typically grow 90cm their first year and even more in the second year.
